Beyond Zero takes part in the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024

BUNGOMA, 15th October 2024: Beyond Zero took part in the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024 commemoration event in Bumula Subcounty, Bungoma. This event, hosted by the County Government of Bungoma, was a vibrant gathering with participation from both national and county leaders.

Special recognition was given to Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who were celebrated as the frontline healthcare providers in their communities. Additionally, cancer survivors were honored for their resilience and their role in raising awareness throughout the county. Both groups were applauded for their efforts in promoting cancer awareness and encouraging early detection, significantly contributing to national efforts to improve cancer health outcomes and reduce stigma.

The event, held in Bumula Subcounty—an area noted for its high incidence of breast cancer— carried the theme “No one should face breast cancer alone.” Throughout the day, integrated free screening services were offered, covering breast, cervical, and prostate cancer, blood pressure, sugar, HIV and Hepatitis and available to women, men, and children of all ages.

Several key issues were discussed, particularly concerning access, affordability, and the availability of healthcare services. The Health Cabinet Secretary, the National Cancer Institute, and the Deputy Governor of Bungoma were among the chief guests. They acknowledged the valuable contributions and collaborations of partners like Beyond Zero, Roche, Texas Cancer, the Clinton Health Initiative, Kenyatta National Hospital, and Women for Cancer, all of whom have supported cancer screening, diagnostics, and treatment.

The event culminated in the launch of two significant documents: The Women’s Integrated Cancer Project and the 2nd Edition of the National Screening Guidelines. The Women’s Integrated Cancer Project, piloted in Nyandarua and Bungoma counties, is supported by WHO and Roche.
