Chief Justice Koome Pushes for Institutional Support in Strengthening Women’s Leadership

NAIROBI 7TH MARCH, 2025: Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, Hon. Lady Justice Martha Koome, has urged the Kenya School of Government (KSG) to develop a specialized program that addresses the sustainability of women in leadership. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the inaugural KSG Women’s Conference, the Chief Justice emphasized that while women work hard to attain positions of power, they often face undue pressure to vacate these roles before leaving a meaningful impact.
“This is our country, our space, and our time. Can we be allowed to work and leave a legacy in everything that we do in the mandate that we have undertaken?” she posed. Justice Koome reiterated that women in leadership have rightfully earned their positions and should be allowed to serve without unnecessary interference. She stressed that such a program would educate institutions and society that women are not temporary placeholders in leadership but rightful leaders who deserve respect and continuity in their roles.
The three-day Kenya School of Government Women’s Conference, held as part of the 2025 International Women’s Week celebrations, was themed “Bridging Generations: Advancing Gender Equality, Harnessing Innovation.” The event served as a platform for dialogue, mentorship, and strategic planning aimed at empowering women and fostering sustainable leadership across different sectors.
During her address, the Chief Justice also took the opportunity to commend the Beyond Zero Initiative, recognizing its unwavering commitment to transforming lives across Kenya. “Beyond Zero has become more than an initiative—it is a beacon of hope and a symbol of what is possible when compassion, innovation, and action come together in the spirit of sisterhood and solidarity,” she stated. She lauded the initiative’s impact on maternal and child health, as well as its efforts in uplifting the voices and potential of women and girls across the country.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Constance Gakonyo, Chief of Staff at Beyond Zero, reinforced the initiative’s mission, emphasizing the importance of health, education, innovation, gender equality, and women’s empowerment. “Our work is rooted in the belief that women’s empowerment is a catalyst for social and economic transformation. Investing in women’s health and well-being leads to stronger families, more resilient communities, and a more prosperous nation,” she remarked.
The closing ceremony also featured remarks from Dr. Josephine Mwanzia, KSG Senior Director Academic Affairs, and H.E. Betty Murungi, First Lady of Siaya County, among others. Additionally, a panel discussion titled “From Inspiration to Action: Stories of Resilience and Leadership” provided an engaging forum where women shared their leadership journeys, challenges, and victories, reinforcing the conference’s overarching message of gender equality and innovation-driven progress.
As the event concluded, there was a shared commitment among participants to continue advocating for sustained female leadership, policy reforms, and systemic changes that ensure women thrive in their professional and leadership roles. With the 2025 International Women’s Day set to be marked tomorrow, the discussions and resolutions from this conference will serve as a stepping stone toward a future where women’s leadership is recognized, respected, and sustained across all sectors.
