"No woman should die while giving birth."

Every year, an estimated 3,000 cases of obstetric fistula are reported because of obstructed labor. Additionally, more than 100,000 cases of obstetric fistula remain untreated due to lack of access to surgical repairs.

Obstetric Fistula affects women who lack access to quality, safe and timely obstetric care. Its prevalence is also seen among women living in communities whose cultural practices include child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM); both factors increase the risk of prolonged obstructed labor.

Fistula camps /outreaches continue to play a key role in raising awareness of obstetric fistula as well as providing surgical repairs for hundreds of women who would otherwise not receive care.

In partnership with other organizations, Beyond Zero has conducted fistula camps in Narok, Kisumu, West Pokot, Nyandarua, Nairobi, Kajiado and Tharaka Nithi, and supported fistula camps in Garissa, Homabay, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia and Makueni counties with the aim of raising awareness on obstetric fistula, sensitizing healthcare workers on obstetric fistula and restoring the dignity of women with obstetric fistula through surgical repairs.
